Baby Blanket Sizes: Complete Size Chart & Guide
A standard baby blanket measures around 30" × 40", but the right size depends entirely on what you are using it for. A swaddle needs enough fabric to wrap and tuck. A lovey is deliberately tiny. A toddler blanket has to cover a bed. Below is every common baby blanket size in one chart, along with which stage each one suits.
Baby blanket size chart
| Blanket type | Typical size | Best for | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lovey / security blanket | 12" × 12" to 16" × 16" | 0–12 months | Comfort object, first attachment item |
| Receiving blanket | 30" × 30" | 0–6 months | Layering, burp cloth, tummy time |
| Swaddle blanket | 44" × 44" to 47" × 47" | 0–3 months | Wrapping, pram cover, nursing cover |
| Standard baby blanket | 30" × 40" | 0–18 months | Pram, car seat, floor time |
| Crib blanket | 36" × 52" | 12 months + | Crib use once safe |
| Toddler blanket | 40" × 60" | 1–3 years | Toddler bed, naps, car seat |
Our own minky baby blankets are 30" × 40" — the standard baby blanket size, and the most versatile of the six. Big enough for the pram, the car seat and floor time; small enough to stay a baby blanket rather than becoming a throw.
How to choose a baby blanket size by stage
Newborn, 0–3 months. If you intend to swaddle, you need roughly 44 to 47 inches square — anything smaller will not wrap and tuck securely. Lightweight and breathable matters more than warmth at this stage. A 30" × 40" blanket is still useful here, just for the pram and car seat rather than for swaddling.
Infant, 3–12 months. This is where 30" × 40" earns its place. It covers a pram, drapes over a car seat, and works as a floor blanket for tummy time. A lovey at around 12 to 16 inches also becomes relevant, as babies start forming attachments to a single comfort object.
Toddler, 1–3 years. Around 40" × 60" covers a toddler bed and travels well for naps. Most children move to this size once they leave the crib.
Baby blanket sizes by use
Pram or stroller. 30" × 40" is the practical maximum — larger blankets trail on the ground.
Car seat. 30" × 40" or smaller. Never place a blanket under the harness; lay it over the top once the straps are fastened.
Crib. 36" × 52" fits a standard crib mattress, but see the safe sleep note below before using any blanket in a crib.
Swaddling. 44" × 44" minimum.
Comfort object. 12" × 12" to 16" × 16" — small enough for a baby to grip and carry.
Milestone photos. 30" × 40" or larger, so the whole baby fits in frame with room around them.
Safe sleep
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping loose blankets, pillows, bumpers and soft objects out of the sleep space until at least 12 months. Before then, a blanket is best used for the pram, the car seat and supervised floor time. A wearable sleep sack is the recommended alternative for warmth in the crib.
Common questions
How big is a baby blanket?
A standard baby blanket is around 30" × 40". Smaller loveys run 12 to 16 inches square, receiving blankets around 30" × 30", and toddler blankets up to roughly 40" × 60".
What size is a receiving blanket?
Receiving blankets are typically 30" × 30". They are used for layering, as a burp cloth, and for tummy time rather than for swaddling.
What size blanket fits a crib?
A crib blanket is around 36" × 52", matching a standard US crib mattress. Bear in mind the AAP advises against loose blankets in the crib before 12 months.
How big should a swaddle blanket be?
Around 44" × 44" to 47" × 47". Smaller blankets sold as swaddles often cannot be wrapped and tucked securely, which defeats the purpose.
What size is a toddler blanket?
Roughly 40" × 60", sized to cover a toddler bed. Most children move to this size after leaving the crib, around 18 months to two years.
How many baby blankets do I need?
Two is the practical minimum — one in use and one in the wash. Beyond that it depends on climate and how often you are out with the pram.
When can a baby sleep with a blanket?
The AAP recommends waiting until at least 12 months. Until then, use a wearable sleep sack in the crib and save the blanket for the pram, the car seat and supervised floor time.
